Work Description

I use hair as both a medium and material. Utilizing 3D scanning technology, I scan my own body to create a three-dimensional model. I then manipulate and transform the model, intertwining, knotting, and scattering the hair to depict a tiny human figure. Through the use of performance art as video footage and the integration of digital technology for editing and animation, I aim to express emotions such as loneliness, helplessness, fear, desire, and anxiety through the expressive body language of the figure.

The combination of hair as a tactile and visual element, along with the digital manipulation of the 3D model and the incorporation of performance art, creates a multi-layered and immersive experience for the audience. The animated video composition serves as a visual narrative, allowing viewers to delve into the complex emotional states and experiences depicted in the artwork.

Chen Ke (Dean of the School of Sculpture and Public Art at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts):
The author of the work "Xu" explores the complexity of human emotions and existence through a dialogue between modern digital technology and traditional materials. In terms of form, through 3D scanning technology, the author transforms their body into a three-dimensional model, and then reshapes it with hair to create a small, ant like image of the human body. At the same time, the body is reshaped through actions such as wrapping, knotting, and sprinkling. These actions themselves are a strong body language, expressing the feeling of confinement, chaos, and free fall. In the entire work, this micro level approach has triggered a reflection on human existence in aesthetics, portraying the insignificance of humans in the universe, but also emphasizing the importance of individual emotional experiences. In the contrast between black and white, the author presents a deep emotional space of introspection, which is not only a visual experience, but also a spiritual touch, exploring the relationship between individuals and themselves The complex and subtle connections between society and even the universe.
